Default Veedubber around?

I was just thinking that I had not seen any posts from Veedubber for a week
or so, and wondered if anyone knew what was up?

I assume that he is busy fighting his fight, but concerned that he might be
in a tough run right now, and needs extra positive thoughts aimed his way.

Anyone know anything?

Thanks;

He posted on his blog on Tuesday. Seems to be on an upswing, near as
I can tell from 500 miles away.

Exchanged e-mails with him yesterday, still sharp as a tack and well
motivated.

Good! He just must not have anything to say for the whole group, right now,
but that's fine.

Great!

I don't know why I didn't think of checking his blog.

Hi Jim, et al

1630 on a Friday afternoon. Got some rain last night which meant some
puddles to clean up today. Over the last I've been 'helping' with an
engine mount... I'll have to post some pix on the blog, this mount is
really worth seeing.

As for not posting, that should probably read '...not PUBLICLY
posting...' since I seem to have been as busy as usual. Mostly though
I've been involved with trying to find a back specialist who not only
knows his onions but has experience with the fall-out from MM and the
way it likes to EAT your bones.

Bottom Line: My back hurts. As in, Major Hurt. I thought it was
because I've been doing more exercises (which the physician's
encourage) so I did all that kinda stuff and my back kept getting
worse, until I was creeping around like a spider. Finally got on the
computer, started running searches for a physician...as mentioned
above. Finally found one, made an appointment. (Interesting point
the It isn't just the FINDING of a suitable physician, it's
finding one who WANTS YOU FOR A PATIENT. That means, having the right
insurance (or lotsa money) and a few other details like that. For
example, most physicians don't want to talk to you if OTHER physicians
have shown you the gate. You aren't just buying the services of a
specialist, you're entering into a kind of partnership, one in which
YOU have to do a fair amount of work if you want the partnership to
work.

Anyway, I've been busy. Helped a guy de-bug an ignition problem,
helped another... already mentioned (engine mount), plus swapping some
Blue Sky about Lifting Bodies and 6-hp engines from Harbor Freight.
(When you think about it, being offered a NEW 6hp engine for $100 is
kinda like money from home :-)

Checked in here a couple of times but didn't see anything I could help
with.

The Lifting Body idea is kind of interesting. It harks back to the
fact the Wright's flew with only 12hp, although they just about
DOUBLED that by the time they started flying at home (ie, out of
Huffman's Prairie or whatever.

The basic idea stems from the fact Harbor Freight has been flogging
inexpensive one-cylinder engines in six- and twelve-horsepower.
Light, too. Initially, the questions had to do with a suitable prop-
hub for such an engine, so we nattered about that for a while. And
yes, you can put a prop-hub on it. You need to do a bit of machining,
and we're talking mild steel here rather than aluminum, so there's a
bit more to it than you might think.

With the prop hub out of the way the next question was, Will it fly?
And the answer to that isn't quite as straight-forward. But yes, it
WILL fly... except you have to spend some time defining the meaning of
'fly,' such as, in ground-effect or out of it. If you mean out of
ground effect, the answer needs to be qualified... one of those,
Yes...but... kinda things.

One of the most VALUABLE things you can do with a 6-hp engine is to
put it on the nose of a 'Dodo' or 'Penguin' -- a NON-flying
'airplane.' That is, a thing with wings and tail surfaces but
something with wings so SMALL for its WEIGHT and THRUST that it can't
really fly. What it CAN do is get up on its single-wheel landing gear
and go bounding along while you go slightly crazy trying to keep the
wings level and not run into anything. This was a critical part of
teaching people how to fly about 90 years ago. Odds are, it still
works today. And it's a hell of a lot of fun (!!) But of course,
you've got to BUILD the thing. That's where a lot of folks throw
their hands up and turn on the tube. Which is kinda sad because
building a Dodo or Penguin will TEACH you how to build a Pietenpohl or
a Fly-Baby. Not just part of it but 100% of it. And I spent a lot of
the week chatting about that; about how to build a flightless bird.

I guess what I really need to find is a back specialist who is also a
good machinist :-)

-Bob
