First Flight by
Burt Compton - Marfa Gliders, west Texas
Your First Flight of the Year
The Soaring Safety Foundation (SSF), the training and safety arm of the Soaring Society of America, encourages all US glider pilots of all experience levels to make their "first flight" of the year with an instructor. This does not mean you should fly on January 1,...

What First Glider to own? by
Sparkorama
I'm getting back into the sport after a long hiatus and flying in the Boston area. I'll be putting some winter flying time in and I'm considering buying my first glider once I'm back to comfortable solos and my private license. (Naturally, I won't fly anything until I am competent and ready). Any...

Refinish gone yellow? by
[email protected]
I recently looked at a glider that had been refinished by Dave Nelson in 2001/2002. It has been in it's trailer, and hangar for the last 2 years and not flown. It is located in Texas. In the dim hangar lights, the finish seemed a very faint yellow. Could of been all the dust... It was glass smooth,...

Borgelt B500VE repeater problem by
Fredrik Rutkvist
We have a Borgelt B500 in one of our club ships which is giving us a headache! The rear seat repeater is not working properly, at power on it goes to full down and chuggs for a while and then stops and doesn´t respond. The main unit up front is working as it is supposed to so we are currently...

Std. Libelle Rigging Kit by
Roger Fowler[_3_]
I have a homemade set of Std. Libelle rigging aids. I believe one person
can assemble using them. I am willing to let them go to a good home for
the cost of shipping. (Might be expensive - some of the parts are big.)
Otherwise they go to the dump.

ClearNav Vario and XCSoar by
Dan Marotta
I'm trading in my CAI-302 for a ClearNav XC vario. Looking at the setup
screen in XCSoar, there's no listed driver for the CNv vario. The XCSoar
Manual also says nothing about the CNv vario though it states that it
will work with any vario which outputs NMEA data. Both my Android phone
and my...

Cambridge 302 and GPS-NAV owners by
John Ferguson[_2_]
If the CAI 302 follows the same technology as the GPS 25 and 20's then give
this a try.
Connect up a PC to the CAI using the serial cable, configure Hyperterm or
your favorite terminal emulator, you just need ascii capabilities.
Get to a command prompt, I think it is just hitting escape and type...

gliders to love/hate by
John Firth[_4_]
As this is the trivia season, here are recollections.
Among the 50 plus types I have flown, the worst are the 2-22 , the
Pratt-Read and probably the Tutor in which
I soloed plus the Kirby Kite II; hard to remember from 55 years ago.
Designs have improved so much that it is hard to rate the...

Stalking the elusive Type Certificate by
Pat Russell[_2_]
I have some questions about the FAA Type Certificate (TC). My questions are not about the Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS). Typically, the TCDS refers to the TC.
I have never seen a TC.
Here are my questions:
1. What does a TC look like?
2. Are copies of the TC available to the public?
3. Is...

Externally mounted GoPros okay? by
Jim Lewis[_2_]
I have seen some wonderful videos made with GoPros stuck on the outside of gliders. Does the FAA have anything to say about the legality of such externally mounted cameras on aircraft certificated as other than experimental?

Is Glideplan still relevant? by
Matt Herron Jr.
Given the level of moving map sophistication in the cockpit these days I am wondering what use, if any, Glideplan is to the soaring pilot. If you use it, where does it add value for you? Safety? training? XC planning or in flight navigation? Competition? Any stories o share?
Thanks,
Matt...
