Blanik flying in the US by
Bob McKellar
I have asked to check out a rumor that there is an L-13 Blanik flying
legally in the US.
That doesn't sound right to me, as I think I would have heard of such a
thing from verifiable source.
Has anybody else heard such a rumor?

Best PDA/PNA for FLARM display? by
Frank Paynter[_2_]
I flew with a portable PowerFLARM at the Uvalde pre-worlds, and I have
a 'brick' unit on order for delivery sometime this fall/winter. As I
wait for delivery, I am contemplating how to integrate it into my
current instrumentation setup.
One possibility I am considering is to not use the brick's...

SAFETY ALERT by
JJ Sinclair[_2_]
I regularly get safety alerts (bulletins, notices) from the FAA and
AOPA, but I never get one from the SSA. I went digging to see if the
SSA had a similar program. I went to SSA home page, then to SSA
Partners..........Hmm, safety isn't a primary concern of the SSA and
is relegated to a soaring...

skyrides are at it again? by
Rex Mayes
It seems that the company SkyRides has now formed a new company called
Soaring Sports and has become an SSA business member to hyjack the
F.A.S.T program in order to sell rides.
Some operators will not do business with Sky Rides by honoring the
certificates it sells. Sky Rides has contacted the...

First hand experience with GPS Jamming by
Steve Leonard[_2_]
Got my first experience with GPS Jamming. Apparently, lots of
truckers on I-35 near the Kansas-Oklahoma border were jamming today.
I would go from 8 satellites showing on my GPS Nav Display (Cambridge
Model 20 GPS) to none, lost distance to turnpoint, lost ground track,
lost bearing to turnpoint...

Tow plane / glider accident, Adrian MI? by
Sean Fidler
I just heard a radio news report of a towing accident in Marshall (Adrian), MI. I have not been able to find any other info. The radio news report said the glider pilot was unharmed but the tow pilot was seriously injured.
Very sorry to hear this news and hoped to find some additional info. ...

LS-8 parts question (securing tailplane) by
Tuno
(Pardon my ignorance of the proper parts nomenclature ...)
There is a thumb wheel used to secure the tailplane (same for the wing
tips), and a blade screwdriver is used to tighten and loosen the wheel
after the fingers have done what they can.
Yesterday while derigging I made a half turn or so of...

Checklists by
Bill D
Any time this topic comes up the discussion is about the contents of
the list. This post is about the physical attributes of a glider
checklist.
No matter what items are on a checklist, it doesn't matter if you
can't find it when you need it. It doesn't matter if the type is too
small to read. ...

addition to preflight checklist by
shkdriver
I have a vivid memory of my instructor making a statement "Don't kill us today" He made this statement as I was finishing my verbally announced prelaunch checklist. At the time It did not seem to be a statement of my lack of skill, but rather a directive for my mental attitude. I think the...

Pilot Mindsets and Enhanced Safety by
BobW
Most U.S. glider pilots know of Tom Knauff, creator and long-time proprietor
of the well-known Ridge Soaring Gliderport in Pennsylvania. Probably fewer are
aware he has an intermittent electronic newsletter, which has as its most
persistent theme the utterly boring, sometimes irritating, theme...

Using XCOM and Flight Line radios in certificated gliders by
Paul Remde
Hi,
A customer has asked me whether or not it is legal to install and use a
non-FAA-approved radio such as the XCOM 760 or FlightLine FL-760 in a type
certificated glider. XCOM's statement on the subject is copied below. Some
aircraft mechanics and avionics shops seem OK with installing those...

Tubes in tail of Jantar 41s Standard by
David Coucke
I have recently acquired a Jantar 41a. I was inspecting the rudder
assembly and found two 3/8 inch tygon tubes with what looked link
copper plug assemblies on the ends. I should have taken a picture.
Does anyone know what these are for. They are attached to the vertical
stab just forward of the...
