The beauty of GA by Gene Seibel
Had a great flight over the weekend that really demonstrated the utility of general aviation. We left St. Louis Regional Airport in the Cherokee at 5 pm on July 3rd. Spent the night in southwest Missouri, where we picked up my daughter and on the 4th flew on to central Kansas. There we dropped off...

Fueling items--17 May auction, Colorado Springs by Douglas Paterson
Very short notice, I realize, but I just found out about this myself. A local "family fun center" (arcade, mini golf, bumper cars, etc.) in Colorado Springs, CO, has gone under & is auctioning everything (literally--the real estate, too) tomorrow, Thursday, 17 May...

Can all HSI's be slaved -- should they be? by Dico
Hello, I'm just reading up on HSI's and I notice some planes have HSI's that are not slaved. I know this means i'm supposed to check it every 15 minutes or so to make sure the HSI and the compass jive. I guess I should still do that even if it was slaved... but what I am wondering is if you can...

Why No N-Number in FAA Database? by Carl Orton
Hi all; Checking into my first plane purchase, and have a question for you that I'm not sure of. I found a plane. I have not seen the registration cert (haven't looked for it). The N-number is *not* in the FAA aircraft registry database.

Uplink weather advice by Richard Kaplan
If you are planning to invest in an installed system then I agree the WSI system is the best at this point. It is a "transmission" rather than "request" system so therefore you can get continually updated weather data. Even more importantly, WSI is an extremely well-established entity in...

Any Apache drivers ? by omk
Hi all, Back into aircraft ownership, this time I was able to go whole four months without an airplane ! After owning couple Cessnas, I got hold of a '56 PA-23-150 project, completely stock except for newer radios, cleveland wheels, and the (Horton ?) tips. My friend and I are going through a...

Another cool RV-4 has been added to the Rec.Aviation Rogue's Gallery! See Jim Fleischman's fabulous paint job at http://www.alexisparkinn.com/rec_aviation.htm (You've got to navigate your way to the "F's" to see it...) He's even got working "bomb shackles" on the wings, for dropping flour...

C-182 carb-heat causing rough running. by R.T.
Hello all, may be some one could help me out. I purchased a 1967 C-182 K this summer with a Continental 470. When I pull out the carb the RPMs drop considerably(200+rpm). I believe that it is creating a rich mixture as on a run up I can get the rpms to come back up by leaning. I guess I'm just...

Looking for user comment : Oil Sump Heater by Javier Gorordo
If anyone has experience with the Reiff's HotStrip Oil Sump Heater, will appreciate any input as to its usefulness/performance. Specifically, I wonder how well (how fast) this pair of 100W heater strips can warm up a cold-soaked sump (8-qts) in an O-300 (open hangar, assume low in the 20s...

What Bugs You The Most? by Charles Talleyrand
Of course everyone thinks their plane is wonderful, but every plane has at least one annoying 'feature'. I don't want to hear about cabin width or cruise speed, but that minor gremlin you would fix if money was free and time replaceable. In my plane, the overflow vent vents too much and full...

Airplane keys by Ben Jackson
Someone in another thread mentioned that they carry their airplane keys all the time. I'd like to do that, but my 39 year old airplane has 3 different keys -- one for the baggage door, one for the cabin door and one for the mag switch. Has anyone successfully re-keyed an airplane back to a single...

Oshkosh Lodging by [email protected]
I was wondering if anyone has Oshkosh lodging recommendations for the 26th to the 30th. This will be my 6th Oshkosh, but the first time I'll be able to fly into the show. All previous times we have commuted from Madison after flying in there due to relatives in that part of the state. I know the...

Would you by this engine? by Greg Copeland
I've been shopping for a plane for a while. I'm hoping I found the one but the engine has given me pause. The engine is 17-years old. It has ~700 hours on it. The average per year is only 49hr/year. Two years during that 17, the plane did not fly and I'm guessing it was not pickled. The latest...

Alternator load distribution in a Baron by Viperdoc
My 1980 B-55 has uneven load distribution on the two alternators, with the right side consistently reading around 15% lower than the left. Is this an indication of a problem with the alternator like a bad diode, or is this normal operating behavior?

Fundamentals of Stall Recovery by w3n-a
http://w3n-a.blogspot.com/2008/12/fundamentals-of-stall-recovery.html Stall accidents usually result from an inadvertent stall at a low altitude in which a recovery was not accomplished prior to contact with the surface. As a preventive measure, stalls should be practiced at an altitude which will...
