US pilots soon to report their skills? by Martin Hotze
can you cook? can you pilot an aircraft? are you into computers? you're the (wo)man! hmm, this one is only for (US-) citizens, methinks. This time the foreigners come better off. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/10/9/12032/9687 ---snip The proposed changes discussed in this meeting include:

Official FAA position on 'Furtherance of business'? by Captain Wubba
Hello. Just reviewing the new 'Sport Pilot' regs for their implications to me as a CFI. Looks like in 61.315(c), the FAA has kept the unfortunate limitation on being PIC of an aircraft 'in furtherance of a business' that they had on Recreational Pilots. Does anyone know of any 'official' FAA...

For the real engineers here by [email protected]
I'm thinking of a clean glider, one that might weigh 1500 pounds and has a glide angle of say 1 in 25. At 50 miles an hour, that would mean in an hour's time it might descend two miles (of course scale it reasonable numbers, I chose those for ease of calculation). That means it's losing about 1500...

Exam-O-Grams by [email protected]
Hello all! I was recently in a local used book store, and on their aviation shelf, there was a bound copy (if staples count as binding) of FAA publication AAC-45C, containing VFR and IFR "Exam-O-Grams". Using the search at the FAA, plus a little Googling of both the Web and Usenet, seems to show...

GARMIN GNC 300XL TSO - Using the PC Interface by KevinBlack
Hi, Club aircraft has a GARMIN GNC 300XL TSO which according to the spec, has a PC interface. Is there any software out there that I can run from a PC to enter routes, waypoints etc directly into the device? Having a PC interface is one thing, being able to use it without resorting to the SDK...

Harrison Ford Reported Fair After Plane Crash by Larry Dighera
Venice, California Another facial scar for Harrison, and a blow to a vintage PT-22. Ford makes the 6 PM news (as every pilot fears). Even at 72, I would expect him to heal reasonably quickly and hopefully, fully. Nice job putting it between the trees. The hearts of the aviation community go...

Power settings for 182RG by Andrew Gideon
I've been going over the POH, remembering the various procedures and settings. But something I've taken for granted in the 172s I've been flying up until now is missing: power settings for the pattern. You know: 1800 RPM and 10 on the flaps for midfield downwind, 1500 and 85 kts and descending...

I'd never seen this before by Kyle Boatright
On Christmas Eve, I got to go flying. I took a friend of ours on a 200 nm cross country to drop her off with her family for the holidays. On the good side, the visibility was as good as I've ever seen in the Southeast. Probably 150 miles or more. I could see the Smokey Mtns waay north. Also,...

Jay, watch those Pathfinder keys! by Ricky
Reading about Jay's son Joe soloing over the house and eventually asking for the Pathfinder for a date reminded me of a funny story. My oldest brother had recently gotten his private cert. in the 70s and, in my dad's absense, convinced my mom that "dad said I could take my girlfriend on a plane...

Smithsonian museum at Dulles by Robert M. Gary
I tried to go to the museum at the Dulles airport today. Boy, they do a good job of hidding that little gem. D.C. easily has the worst roads for visitors in any city in any country I've ever visited. It is very hard to find things... 1) Many roads have formal names as well as common names. The map...

Flight Simulator Software - Any Help or Just a Game? by pjbphd
I'm a student pilot and have heard mixed reviews of Flight Sim software. Some say it's great for a little on the ground practice. Others say it's really a waste of time. I don't expect it to really take the place of air time, but I'm wondering if anyone out there can tell me if it's really...
