What is Purpose of Sports Class Nationals? by
Frank Paynter
According to the 2006 Sports Class Nationals Rules:
'The purpose of the Sports Class Nationals is to determine
the 2006 Sports Class Champion, and to select team
members for international Club Class competitions'
With most of the gliders at the latest 2006 Nats in
the ASW27/28 & LS-8 range, does...

Why are side sticks unpopular in sailplanes by
J. Nieuwenhuize
Side sticks seem pretty popular in powered aircraft. Personally like them.
In sailplanes they have the additional advantage of allowing either a smaller cockpit (less drag) or more room. Diana, HP18 and several older designs have them.
Yet, they seem highly unpopular. Why would a well-designed...

Red V symbol (log file not valid) after OLC upload. by
Shane Neitzey
I use a Cambridge 25. Also using the cai2igc4olcb zip exe files for
conversion.
The program appears to successfully convert stating Seal; intact, Date
integrity check PASS, Security check PASS
After upload to OLC, the notorious RED V symbol (log file not valid)
appears for the flight.

horiz tail airfoil observations by
Brad
I've been perusing Fred Thomas's Sailplane Design book lately. I am
curious, why do most of the modern sailplanes use a non-symetrical
airfoil for the horiz surface, and most of the "older" sailplanes use a
symetrical airfoil?
I was looking at a Krokus at the Pensacola airshow over the...

SN-10 vs CAI 302 by
Frank
Hi,
I have been using a SN-10B/Volkslogger combination in my LS-4 for the
last 5 years and have loved it. However, I just acquired a glider with
a CAI-302/PDA combination and am contemplating swapping the systems
before selling my LS-4.
I like the presumed flexibiity of taking the PDA with me at...

Airspeed control during ground launch? by
Roger Worden
What is the correct relationship between pitch angle and airspeed during
ground launch, either by auto or winch? Different sources make conflicting
statements:
1. Speed control is OPPOSITE to that during aerotow and gliding
* SSA Soaring Flight Manual, page 13-10: "Under most circumstances, the...

Correct way of holding the stick during ground roll? by
Michael[_7_]
Very beginning pilot here (again).....and I am confused about the
appropriate way of holding the stick during the ground roll prior to
take off.
In Thomas Knauff's Glider Basics, he states (p.59, 2005 edition):
"....before signaling to proceed with the launch, the glider pilot
should set the...

double wide trailer by
Tony[_5_]
i know its been done a few times. I've heard of a husband/wife duo of
Libelles that had a double trailer. Also I've seen a double 1-26 open
trailer. Leah and I only have one pickup but two gliders and tend to
like to go places together. I'd like to solicit opinions (dangerous
thing to do here!)...

The ideal Christmas gift by
bumper[_4_]
For your glider friends: inexpensive, used often, and appreciated.
The MKIV yaw string, with it's clear tubulator base, is one of the
least expensive "right up front" toys you can buy for a glider! Just
$12 USD, free shipping to US and only $1 international shipping.

Gather local wind data by
Anders Petersson
Hi
I have developed a system "Windsond" to gather local wind data at different altitudes in an easy way. This is done by launching a 60 liter helium balloon with electronics that transmits back sensor data as it ascends. On the ground, a laptop receives the data and displays diagrams of wind speed,...

Ipaq HX4700 Series by
XXL
Hoping someone may be able to help. I'm working on getting my gear up and running for the coming season and want to use my iPaq HX4700. It has not been used in quite a while, so I ordered a new 3.V = 2000mAh battery. A voltmeter shows that is has juice, and seems to be charging, but the device will...

Alfonso Jurado by
Echo
Good Morning,
I am entering my 4th year as the 3rd owner of ASW20 #20463, better known as Alfonso's 20. I grew up soaring in New Castle, VA, and saw Alfonso a few times but never really knew him. It is my understanding that he has bad dementia now. I know the former Miami gliderport was his...

Amazing Winching Weekend in Utah by

The Utah Soaring Association (USA) held a winch training camp at Nephi this last weekend with our newly purchased and rebuilt winch. We invited Karl Striedieck and his brother Walter to come and train 4 of our cfig's over the course of 2.5 days. We ended up with 4 club cfig's who are now winch...

The UV Index and why your canopy is your friend by
Eric Greenwell
I recently bought an Oregon Scientific UV888 Personal UV Monitor (~$30).
Among other things, it measures the UV flux and computes the UV Index
(UVI), then determines a "safe exposure time" based on your input of
skin type and the SPF of the sunscreen you are using.
Naturally, I made a...

Flap performance by
Just Me[_2_]
I'm considering purchasing a Ventus B. I'm aware of the "stability" issues, although some the extent of the stability issue seems to vary from plane to plane and pilot to pilot. I've talked to some people who say its not a big deal, and others who say its problematic. It's hard for me to know...

LXNAV 8000 OAT Incorrect by

Hello everyone, this is my first post. I am new to soaring and have acquired a glider with an LXNAV 8000 already installed. I noticed yesterday that the outside temperature (OAT) is incorrect by about 20 degrees F. I placed the probe in a bath of ice water and it read 50 degrees F and responded...

ASW-24 by
Lee Rusconi
I have an opportunity to buy a 1988 ASW-24 which is
in beautiful condition, good electronics and great
trailer. The glider is equipped with M&H winglets.
The asking price is $45,000 US. I would appreciate
any feedback regarding the winglets and/or the price.
Thanks
