Kestrel 19 Questions by
[email protected]
Sorry for posting aircraft-specific questions in here, but I haven't
received any responses from my queries in the Kestrel401 forum.
I recently bought a Slingsby T59D Kestrel 19. Love the ship :) Okay,
it's big and heavy, but so am I.
I need to get my hands on the Addenda for the POH,...

Canadian Pilot wants U.S. Certificate by
[email protected]
Hi Guys,
Hopefully, you can help me get this figured out. I'm going on a trip
to Florida next summer, and I'd like to fly a glider while I'm there
(I kept seeing gorgeous Cu's from Mickey-Mouse-Land). I figured I
would get checked out in a Grob 103 and then go have some fun in a
Grob 102 or...

Parachute Required by Type Certificate by
[email protected]
Just a curiosity...
I fly a Slingsby T59-D Kestrel 19 in Canada. According to my Type
Certificate (G-93), a "back type parachute" is listed as required
equipment, along with basic instruments. So, a parachute must be worn
in order to fly the aircraft or I'm in violation of the TC. (The U.S.
TC...

Declaring a flight in WinPilot to the Volkslogger by
JohnD
Chuck:
Jerry has been very helpful to me over the past years. Even called me
from Spain to help with what turned-out to be an operator malfunction.
Ooops.
What is your configuration? How are they connected? In some
confugurations (B50) there needs to be a Flt/Dec. switch which in Dec.
mode cuts...

Transponder Information Requested by
JohnD
I am going to add a transponder to my sailplane this month. I am
considering the Microair T2000 and Ameri-King ASK-350 encoder.
Can anyone who has installed and used them give me feedback on these
two units?
Are there other products I should be considering and why?
Thanks in advance for your...

Sad News by
JohnD
I sadly report that Hans Langer, the leader of the Southern California
Safari Group, died yesterday in a glider accident in Lone Pine. God
rest his soul.
ALWAYS remember to prepare properly (positive control checks EVERY
flight), always know your emergency procedures, and fly safely.

Soaring Avionics Archaeological Finds by
JohnDeRosa
We have been cleaning out our club's hangar's store room and are
finding all sorts of old and odd items, no doubt left over from some
old and odd members.
I was curious about two of the items and wondering if anyone can shed
some light.
- A clear bag containing two smaller clear bags. First bag...

Hangar Door Cables? by
JohnDeRosa
We had an overhead bi-fold hangar door cable snap yesterday (one of
five). Of course those on the field opened the door anyway. Sigh.
The cable had rusted through inside the guide tube on the wind up
spool. We had one hell of a time getting the old rusty cable out of
that old rusty tube. We...

Glider Presentations to Non-Glider Pilots? by
JohnDeRosa
I have the opportunity to present in March to a group of non-glider
pilots the joys of soaring. Have you done such a thing? If so, can I
leverage parts of your presentation? Please contact me. Thanks.
We are working on an outline of what needs to be covered in the 90-120
minute presentation. ...

FAA Notice N8900.204 - English Proficiency by
JohnDeRosa
Has everyone seen the below? Comments?
Spoken English proficiency might be "easy" to determine during routine
meetings, but what about written? Ask the pilot to write an essay?
Will the CFI(G) remain anonymous when they "turns in" a pilot to the
FSDO for mispronouncing...

Calculating G Forces from IGC file? by
JohnDeRosa
I thought it would be an interesting experiment to take an IGC trace
and figure out rates of climb. That much was pretty easy. I took
consecutive IGC file B-records and with just a little math I was able
to determine the ft/min or meters/min climb rates*.
I then thought it would be a good...

Glider Wings on a 747? by
JohnDeRosa
I was asked last night "Why don't commercial airliners (747, A380,
etc) have 'super wings' like gliders?" I mumbled something semi-
coherent but didn't really know the correct answer.
So, would high aspect ratio and highly efficient glider-like wings
enhance fuel economy for all airplanes? What...
