Is SKEW-T still important to soaring pilots ? by [email protected]
Having used XC skies and now Topmeteo, I wonder what's the need to get the forecasted SKEW -T diagram to points along your task. Will you as, a pilot, get any better prediction of soaring conditions if you use both ? Dan

HYPOXIA by Waveguru
This is in response to the paraglider missing thread. Many pilots all over the world underestimate the effects of hypoxia and think that they are the exception to the rules. This ferry pilot certainly did. ...

Paint for white fiberglass trailer top by Senna Van den Bosch
I got an older Anschau Komet trailer that needs some care and decided to repaint the entire top side, which is white painted fiberglass. What paint would you recommend for doing this? I'd like it to be a bit glossy and waterproof, as the trailer will stay outside in summer but hangared in winter....

Time for a new US Schempp-Hirth Rep? by [email protected]
Unfair to do this on a forum perhaps but I think it's that bad. Wondering if anyone else with an older SH model is feeling the same. I have not been able to get parts for my glider. I will not go into exactly what I have and have not done to make it happen because I think I've done more than what...

Typical glider service lives? by [email protected]
I noticed the SZD-55 has a service life of only 3,000 hrs with a possible 1,500 hr extension. Is this typical of other modern ships like the Discus, Ventus, LS, DG series etc??

Glider Simulator Training at the USAFA by [email protected]
In the summer of 2018, the United States Air Force Academy began using Mach 0.1 Simulated Glider Cockpits as part of their "Glider Airmanship" course. The data collected from the course shows that the solo rate for students who completed the course in 2018 was more than double the solo rate of the...

The Reformed Smoker Challenge by JS[_5_]
With all the talk on 13.5m electric stuff, new class of "soaring competition" etc... A challenge for anyone currently flying only gliders with some sort of "method of propulsion": Fly a season in pure glider to get your chops and credibility back up. You don't have to buy a new glider, either...

Using new variometer technology to display real time lift coefficient? by [email protected]
A question respectfully submitted to the pundits who lurk in these halls: Please forgive me if this topic has been covered before; I have done a general search on this forum and have found no mention of it anywhere. Having been away from Soaring for about 35 years, and having just come back...

Aerobatic Two Seat Gliders? by Terry Pitts
There was a recent thread about inexpensive two seat gliders. I made me wonder how crazy I might be. I'd like to buy a two seat glider that could be used for beginner to intermediate-ish aerobatics. Fun for me, perhaps someone might want to do some aerobatics for a flight review instead of an hour...

Amazing soaring facts? by Doug Easton
Looking for some help from the group... I'm putting together a presentation (might be overhead viewgraphs and/or a series of posters) for the general public on soaring and I want to catch their interest and imagination. For instances might be: the world altitude record for a glider is close...

Articles by John Cochrane[_3_]
It's the solstice, so you won't be doing much soaring... but you might want to read about it. I put two new articles on my webpage http://faculty.chicagobooth.edu/john.cochrane/soaring/index.htm#safety_rules "Team flying." Pilot to pilot radio communication will be allowed at regionals this...

N482BG / C-GHMY Jantar Standard 2 history request by lynn
I recently was high bidder at a bankruptcy auction in Ohio for the subject sailplane and trailer. I took a chance on it as I live 1000 miles away and only became aware of the sale some 20 hours before closing. All I could get out of the auctioneer was it did not appear to be broken! Got my bid in...

302 wind calculation by AK
Does anyone have any insight into how a 302 calculates wind? How good is it in regards to wind a straight flight with very little turning? How valuable is it on a ridge? What does it need in order to calculate probable wind one 360 turn, part of a turn, two turns? Any information is appreciated.

Soaring in China by Michael Ash
I'm going to China for a few weeks in October and I thought it would be nice to get in a little flying while I'm there. Unfortunately information on the subject seems hard to find. I've found a couple of posts in this group which didn't get much in the way of replies, and I found one article...

Newbie question: staying calmly behind glider tug by [email protected]
I'm planning to join the local soaring club and had my first ride last weekend. I was eager to take the controls while being towed and was enormously humbled by the experience. I've had my ppsel for several years, but do not have many hours under my belt. Never the less, I was looking forward to...
